Indiana has launched a new apprenticeship program aimed at preparing high school students for careers as early childhood educators.

The Early Childhood Education Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Program, which currently involves 65 students from seven high schools, provides hands-on experience and valuable credentials while still in school. The initiative is part of the state’s effort to offer students practical career pathways, making the transition from high school to the workforce smoother.

Indiana Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner praised the program for giving students the opportunity to explore career interests early. “Sometimes these experiences affirm a student’s future plans, and other times, they may decide to go a different direction,” said Jenner, noting that both outcomes offer valuable learning experiences. The students participating in the program have partnered with local early childhood education providers and higher education institutions, allowing them to graduate with real-world work experience and a credential that enhances their readiness for a career in early childhood education.

At a recent signing day event at the Indiana Statehouse, students from various districts officially “signed” their apprenticeship agreements with employers and education partners, marking the start of their career journey. The program, a collaboration between the Indiana Department of Education and the Family and Social Services Administration, is part of Indiana’s Next Level Programs of Study and funded by the federal Preschool Development Grant. Students will earn high school credit while gaining experience, preparing them to either enter the workforce as early childhood educators or pursue higher education degrees in the field.

Indiana has a shortage of early childhgood educators. A recent report from Talent First via the Early Learning Advisory Committee found that over 2,400 early education jobs go unfilled in Indiana each year.
