The diveristy of Indiana’s students is not matched by the teachers in the workforce.

Indiana’s student population is significantly more diverse than its teacher workforce, according to data from The New Teacher Project (TNTP) in their K–12 Teacher & Student Demographic Dashboard. The data, covering the 2023 school year, reveals a 29% gap between the percentage of students of color and teachers of color across the state.

The report shows that 35.8% of Indiana’s students are from minority backgrounds, while only 6.7% of the state’s teachers identify as people of color. In raw numbers, Indiana has 367,805 students of color but just 4,532 teachers of color. By comparison, 660,261 white students are taught by 62,745 white teachers, highlighting the stark demographic imbalance.

Indiana’s struggle to align teacher diversity with its student population is part of a national trend. States with greater diversity tend to have even larger gaps between the demographics of students and educators, suggesting that a diverse population does not necessarily translate into a diverse workforce.
