A dive into Indiana’s most recent release of ILEARN scores reveals stark racial disparities.

According to the data released by the Indiana Department of Education Black and Hispanic students scored significantly worse on the most recent ILEARN than White and Asian students respectively.

About 20% if Black students were rated as ELA proficient as opposed to White students who clocked in at around 47%. Hispanics were 27% and Asians at 55.6% A similar trend held true for math with Black and Hispanic students coming in dozens of points behind their White and Asian peers. 

It is worth noting that scores are still down across the board relative to their pre-pandemic levels. A trend observed nationwide with standardized tests. But even in a down year, racial disparities exist, and that trend has also persisted over the years, both locally and nationally.
