The school voucher program allows Hoosiers to use public funds to attend private schools. The program is designed to give students more choice about where they get an education, but many people are now claiming that the program is costing too much money.

The voucher program cost Indiana $131 million last year. Some observers claim the program has run a deficit because many students taking advantage of it have no history of attending an Indiana public school; thus, the state is footing the bill for students who potentially would have paid for school out of pocket. Some estimates place the deficit at around $53 million.

Critics of this calculation argue nobody could know whether these students would have attended public school or not, and students are only getting the amount of money they would be entitled to at a public school.
