Indiana Governor Mike Braun is facing backlash after announcing that teachers who made inappropriate social media comments following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk could lose their licenses.
Braun said that while free speech must be protected, “calls for political violence are not freedom of speech and should not be tolerated.” He has directed Secretary of Education Katie Jenner to review posts flagged for allegedly celebrating or encouraging violence, citing state laws that allow license suspension for misconduct or immorality.
The move is part of a wider effort by state leaders to monitor the online speech of public employees. Attorney General Todd Rokita recently updated his “Eyes on Education” portal to include nine educators reported by the public for posts about Kirk’s death. Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith has also invited citizens to submit reports of teachers or state workers who make similar comments.
Employees at Ball State University and the Department of Child Services have already been fired over their social media activity tied to the incident.
This mirrors announcements and efforts in other red states around Charlie Kirk posts. Both Florida and Texas have made similar announcements.
