“I’m going to tell you right now. No stork brought you here. You’re here because I had sex.”
If you are wondering what I said when my mom said that to me, I said nothing. My eyes got big, and I knew the “birds and the bees” conversation was about to take place. Both my parents were actually involved in talking to my sisters and me about this topic. Although I learned more information after I left home and was on my own, I am glad I received some knowledge at home.
Unfortunately, at home, is the place where some people believe sex education should stay. We are sexual beings, and sex is part of life. It is a part of life where people need to receive an education.
Since I am not an expert on this topic, I took the opportunity to speak to three experts. They shared their approach to the work and shared tips and resources for parents, educators, and students.
Parents have the right to teach about this topic when and how they see fit; however, those views should not prevent other children from having the opportunity to have access to a proper education about sexuality and making responsible and informed decisions with their bodies.
