Governor-elect Eric Holcomb has started unveiling his plans for his tenure in office. One of them would appear to be to switch the state’s highest education office from an elected position, to an appointed position.

Glenda Ritz currently holds that spot. It is no secret that Glenda Ritz and Governor Mike Pence did not see eye to eye on many issues. The superintendent and the governor had an adversarial relationship at best. Holcomb appears to admit that this is the primary reasoning behind the move.

“This is not about the person, me or the superintendent,” Holcomb says. “This is about the position and how they can be aligned to work truly together.”

The bill to make the switch is expected to be filed next week.

In most states, the superintendent is already an appointed position; however, this proposal will likely be controversial, as many people are already calling it a political move.
