It is no secret that the Common Core was not necessarily universally well received. Still, after a long and bitter battle, most states adopted it. However, it now appears that not even that is enough to guarantee its usage.

Lee County School District of Florida just voted to opt out of all statewide and standardized testing. This sets a precedent that many other districts could replicate. Particularly in more conservative areas of the country where the Common Core is less popular.

Superintendent Nancy Graham said following the vote that the decision “will hurt children,” to a chorus of boos.

The board did not discuss consequences for members or proposals to replace the Common Core exam.

Other school boards are also researching opting out of the Common Core.
