In the days following the vice-presidential picks by the presidential nominees, both sides very quickly seized the chance to attack each other’s choice.

One source of contention was Mike Pence’s education record. Mike Pence insists that he made “record” investments in education. Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, claims Pence slashed education budgets.

Factcheck.org, which used local news sources to research the claims, found that both candidates were wrong.

While it is technically true that Mike Pence passed an education budget larger than any before he took office, his claim does not account for inflation.

The 2017 budget of $10 billion is the largest in nominal dollars, but when adjusted for inflation, it is actually smaller than some previous budgets.

But this, according to FactCheck.org, hardly qualifies as “slashing” the budget, making Hillary Clinton wrong as well.

The education budget was lowered in certain areas, but Clinton didn’t specify which ones when she made her claim. She just said “Indiana”, which Factcheck.org says makes her claim too broad to be one hundred percent true.
